Think you have a brown thumb and can’t keep houseplants alive? There are some easy-care, low maintenance choices worth a try.
House plants not only bring natural beauty into your home but also help to clean the air from environmental toxins. Look for them at your local nursery, or visit Home Depot, Lowes, or most grocery stores.
General Growing Tips:
Bright, reflected light is best for most, but lower light can be tolerated. Only use a standard potting soil. Don’t over-water! Let the soil dry between waterings for all of the following houseplants.
Aloe Vera
This one is best known for its plump leaves that can provide a soothing gel for cuts and burns.
Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Other common names you may have heard are mother-in-law’s tongue or ribbon plant. It has thick, waxy leaves that love being potbound, and thrive on being ignored.
Jade Plant
A slow growing and very long-lived succulent with thick, lush leaves and visually interesting branches.
Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata)
It’s other common name is elephant’s foot, because of the flattened gray base that looks like a pachyderm’s foot. These fattened stems actually store water so the plant has its own reservoir to draw from during times of drought. A very slow grower.
Areca Palm
This tropical looking plant can grow as much as 6 to 7 feet tall, but won’t get as big if kept in a smaller pot.
